Chocolate Fest to Enlighten Your Senses and Support SACHA – Feb 10th 2011

0
The Chocolate Fest is upon us again.  This year’s incarnation is being held in the Chedoke Ballroom of the Hamilton Convention Centre.  The 2010 event raised $33,000+ in support of Sexual Assault Awareness in Hamilton, Ontario.   SACHA is an organization dedicated to ensuring that women have a right to live without violence and it’s unfortunate that these services are still needed in this day and age.

Staff have been working excitedly lining up the best Hamilton Chocolatiers, sponsors and supporters.  The event goes from 5pm to 8pm and there will be tickets at the door.
With lots of Chocolate, music and a silent auction, this will be one event you don’t want to miss.

Hamilton really is Crooked Hill

0
They say Hamilton is a translation of Crooked Hill, and Saturday January 15th at the Studio at Hamilton Place, the One gang christened Crooked Hill Band will rock the stage debuting their newly released EP.

Hey, Graham Rockingham was a couple of days ahead when he wrote his weekend Best Bets.

This 6 piece sextet came together after year’s of playing and friendships and relationships.  Devised only 3 months ago, Crooked Hill Band members have taken their talents and surrounding themselves with good people to warp through recording and production of an EP and Release Party.  Playing together for years            definitely helped them attain this proudly in such a short time.

It’s going to be an impressive show.  Fronted by three vocalists, David, Rachel and Liona, Crooked Hill offer a different sound on every song, while keeping the sound within the band.  With David and Sean on guitar,  Caleb on bass and Taylor providing the beats on drums, they are sure to rise up, up and away while they re-define the lines of what rock and pop is.

Tickets may be available through their website or Reverb Nation, while there may be limited tickets available at the door.  If you follow them on Twitter, there may be updates, so make sure you’re following them.

Doors open at 7pm, with the Studio opening at 7:30pm.  Seating is General Admission, so get there early.  The start time is listed at 8pm, with Michael Gorda opening with an acoustic set. #listenlocal

When great people come together, Femmenominal things happen.

The Femme-Nominal 5 Showcase at the Casbah, in support of Be-You-tiful Girls, was an awesome time last week, and 1 of the responses I keep hearing from people that didn’t go was “Damn, how did I miss that?”

Well, with it’s success, there is the possibility that Queen Cee will muster the forces for a future show, but with everything that lady does with her positive energy it may not be until 2012.

Here’s a wrapup video that QueenCee put together last weekend.

Twitter – #ListenLocal #FollowFriday #ff #hamont – Hamilton’s Crooked Hill

Hey, three months ago, these young musicians from Hamilton, Ontario said “Let’s make a band!”  In that time, they have recorded their debut EP and will be marking it with an upcoming CD Release Party on Jan 15th.

Crooked Hill take their name from the literal translation of the word Hamilton – the city in which the band members hail from. It only made sense to name themselves after the city in which they met, became friends, and grew together as musicians. They are proud to be a part of Hamilton’s musical family and history.

I love theme followfridays, and this one was a lot of fun putting together.

Here they are -

Start off the New Year Femme.nomenally! ~ Supporting females and female artists. Casbah Thursday Jan 6th 9pm #listenlocal

Happy New Year 2011!

Yes, it’s a great time to be in the city of Hamilton, Ontario. As Bob Mesereau lauded during his guest host stint at the HMA Rising Star, Hamilton is the birthplace of Canadian Music.  The man knows his history as he travelled the country extensively while writing his Canadian Bestsellers – The Top 100 Canadian Singles and The Top 100 Canadian Albums.

They may not be on the lists(maybe they are, I haven’t read them), but Thursday Jan 6th at the Casbah the Femme-Nomenal 5, known as Queen Cee MusicNiLLa MusicSara Green MusicNyx Songbird & Ninah Browne aka PBS (Nash New-Era) will let us in on a little known fact that most of us are unaware of – Hamilton has some fabulously talented artist musicians.  And they play local shows, in our corner pubs and our grungy waterholes and it doesn’t cost you a weeks pay to sit up where your nose bleeds!

Thursday at the Casbah, at 9pm,  these ladies take to the stage bringing R&B, Hip/Hop and a lot of Soul.  If you doubt their talent, have a listen to the short promo video that was produced for the show.  For 10 dollars (Tix available at the Casbah or leave a message on the facebook event page or msg WSGT_QueenCee on Twitter) 5 Femme-nominally gifted ladies will entertain, backed up by beats and a live band.

Like a phoenix rising, cuz the sisters are always shining.

Part of the proceeds from this show will benefit Be-You-Tiful Girls Club, a local organization spearheaded by Queen Cee.  After successfully launching When Sistahs Get Together, Queen and her family put time and energy into Be-You-tiful Girls Club, which is a Multicultural Girls Self-Esteem Initiative.  With extensive help from her fellow performers, Queen Cee looks to empower the young ladies of Hamilton, to help them learn and understand respect and themselves.

BE smart, BE courageous, BE strong, BE creative, BE unique,
Be YOU, because you’re a BE Girl, a Be-You-tiful Girl!

All this for ten bucks and you get to see what is going to probably be the only one of it’s kind this year.  #listenlocal and support local artists, and they will repay Hamilton tenfold.  Come on out and support them, the cause and the continuation of great local music!

They are ladies, they’re on fire.  You dont want to miss them tearing up the stage.

10 dollar Tix available at the Casbah – 306 King St West, Hamilton or leave a message on the facebook event page or msg WSGT_QueenCee on Twitter

((I’ve only watched this 100 times.  can it be thursday already?  See you there!))

If you follow on Twitter, after the Hamilton Music Awards I did a Follow Friday list of local artists involved in 2010.  You can find@nillamusic on that list.  @WSGT_QueenCee is linked above.  Here is @SaraGreenMusic @neisha_new_era and @Nyxthesongbird

As always, I’m @hamiltonthisis.  See you at the show!

Treat yourself to an Awesome Acoustic Show Thursday Dec 23rd, 8 pm – support the JR Digs Acoustic Christmas in support of CityKidz for charity

0
Jr Digs is a busy guy these days.  Between radio appearances on 101.5 and Y108, a spot on CHCH TV Tuesday morning and rehearsing for his upcoming 2nd Annual Acoustic Christmas at the Casbah this Thursday, odds are right now he’s probably taking a nap.

Not for long because JR knows how important CityKidz has become for the city of Hamilton, Ontario.  No longer content with just being the town loudmouth (megaphone usually nearby…), JR Digs is turning it up a notch collaborating with the likes of Tom Wilson, Max Kerman (of the Arkells), Mike Trebilcock (formerly of the Killjoys), Bob Lanois (Grant Avenue Studios) and this year’s multi- Hamilton Music Award winners Harlan Pepper, to celebrate this time of year.

If you forgot to send a toy to charity, if you walked past a Sally Ann Kettle empty-handed, if you’ve stuck your head in a hole charitably-wise this holiday season, well here’s your chance to make it up.  Tickets are limited and only 20 dollars, %100 of which JR Digs is making sure ends up helping over 3000 children, which is what CityKidz does best.

In addition to traditional media, JR has been mashing away spreading the word via social media (and probably a couple of hours wasted on Facebook games…).  Good causes should always go viral, especially ones that will rock, such as will be JR Digs 2nd Annual Acoustic Christmas at the Casbah.  JR has great people working with him to ensure it’s success, including the wonderful Deborah Warner, publicist.  You can find the complete details below in the media release.
UPDATE Tuesday 5pm – Unfortunately, Bob Lanois is out of the country and will not be back in time for Thursday’s show.  Do not discount JR though, as there are still mystery guests yet to be announced, and some that will only be announced during the show.  Don’t find out after what a great show it will be, get your tickets today!

MEDIA ALERT

Legendary Bob Lanois and Max Kerman of The Arkells added to the growing list of Hamiltonians performing Xmas benefit concert for City Kidz.

(Hamilton – December 23, 2010) Max Kerman, lead singer of The Arkells and Bob Lanois are confirmed to be on stage next Thursday night at the JR Digs 2nd Annual Acoustic Christmas Concert at The Casbah. Kerman and Lanois will be joined by former Killjoy’s front-man Mike Trebilcock and headliner Tom Wilson. 100% of proceeds are going to City Kidz to give over 3000 needy children Christmas presents this year.

Max Kerman’s band, The Arkells, have experienced incredible success over the past two years with their debut album Jackson Square. Just finishing a cross country tour, The Arkells have experienced a major amount of air play nation wide. A big part of their skyrocket to fame is due to Max Kerman’s unique voice and the band’s original sound. Fans will now have the rare opportunity to hear Kerman perform acoustically on December 23rd.

Bob Lanois is one of Hamilton’s most well known and celebrated musicians. Having worked with acts like U2 and Bruce Cockburn, Lanois’s reach goes far beyond this city’s borders. But this incredible harmonica player always comes home and will be here to help the children of Hamilton this holiday season.

Headliner Tom Wilson of Blackie & The Rodeo Kings/Junkhouse and most recently the band Lee Harvey Osmond, will be treating the audience this year to a very rare acoustic performance. For the second year in a row, Mike Trebilcock will be opening the show. Former front man of the Killjoys and several critically acclaimed solo projects, Trebilcock will be stripped down to a guitar and microphone on stage.

Gemini Nominated Television host JR Digs can currently be seen nationally on Global television Saturday nights on “In The Can with JR Digs.” His first late night sitcom series will begin airing in the New Year on Global. JR will also begin a series of live stand up comedy shows following his debut on stage recently opening for Tom Green. South of the border JR had a short stint working as a correspondent for the 10pm Jay Leno Show on NBC and shot segments with Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais and a few other well known comedic actors. Next Thursday night JR will kick things off with a couple classic Christmas tunes but from that point onward his only job will be as the host and MC to whats shaping up to be a memorable night of music in the city of Hamilton.

When: Thursday, December 23, Doors open at 7:30 p.m, show starts at 8:00 p.m.

Where: The Casbah in Hamilton

Ticket Information:  Tickets are $20.00. They are being sold at various locations including The Casbah, Dr. Disc, Maddison Avenue Salon, Picks and Sticks Music, Brain(James North) and The Ticat Store(1 Jarvis Street)

Additional musicians: Still more TBA

Dear Parents, this Christmas buy your kid a board game.

0
The advent of technology has provided us with un-imaginable possibilities, yet one day it may just replace our imaginations.  Why imagine something when it can be technologically recreated right in front of us; to see, to hear and maybe one day to feel and smell.  Most of these things will require batteries or cords.

This Christmas, buy your kid a board game.  There are many of them spanning all different genres and age considerations.

Recently at the Plaza Hotel in Hamilton, HammerCon II left it’s mark as 100′s of gamers came out of the woodwork to meet and mingle, to play and most importantly, to imagine the possibilities.  And 99% of what they did, did not require batteries.  A game, some paper, a couple of dice, and some good people make for a great event.

There are plenty of places in Hamilton, Ontario to purchase board and role-playing games.  Playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends will not turn little Tommy into Tom Hanks in Mazes and Monsters, but there may be problems when you wake up at 5 am and he’s still killing pixels on the latest XBOX game you thought he would like for Christmas.  The Lone Wolf Couch Surfing Gangsta was never a character we played as children.

If you’re wondering where to find these imagination gems, you can try Bayshore Hobbies (King West at Macklin), Conspiracy Comics (King West at Paradise), or have a look online at Fun Games Cafe.  Most large toy stores and the department stores have selections of board games for children, so once you’re done shopping the electronics, have a look.  Maybe you’ll find a game that you can play with your kids, and that’s called family fun.  Especially when the hydro goes out and you have to entertain by candlelight.
